    !HOME: BROMLEY TWP.EH5 CON 9 ; LIVING WITH PARENTS IN 1851 CENSUS AGE 20 interview in renfrew mercury: states date of birth 1832. sitting in front of a fireplace built when the house was erected over two generations ago but since reduced in size to effect a saving in the fuel which fireplaces so readily consume. the residence was built by Mr. Bowes' father-in-law, r.r.smith who died in 1907(7) left Ramsay Twp. in 1836 and settled in Admaston and then to Douglas. The journey from Ramsay was made in the winter season on sleighs. At that time there was no bridge at Douglas, nor was there any for many years afterward. Mr. Bowes had the contract of building the second, which a number of years ago ws replaced by the pressent structure. Before Lanark and Renfrew Counties were separated Mr. Bowes went to Perth as juryman, sometimes walking there and back. He was for several years a constable, a man over six feet and weighing 175 pounds, and on more than one occasion he took a prisoner to Perth. One of them was aWaterloo veteran who in Douglas shot and killed another resident of the village. Sentenced to hang, the sentence was communted to imprisonment for life, and afterward, on account of failing health, a pardon was granted. 39.
