!Education: William seems to have been a well educated man. His writing and grammar are excellent, and he also seems to have acted on behalf of other members of the family when the need arose. When his brother George died intestate, early in 1840, it was William who acted on behalf of George's son John, "who was absent from this Province by the last accounts which were received from him" to make sure that he inherited his father's land (the east 1/2 of Lot 11, Concession 5, Ramsay Twp., Lanark Co.(10)

!Marriage: Two entries are listed in the Old Parochial Registers under marriages: (first one) 6 Feb 1824 (Old Parochial Register for Kilmuir Parish Easter, ROC, SCT; Marriages for 1824) "William Sutherland, Beachan, Parish of Dornoch, Sutherlandshrire, and Alexandrena Ross, Milntown in this Parish." (second one): 7 Feb 1824 (Old Parochial Register for Dornoch, 47 Marriages from 1820-1849, for 1824, SUT, SCT) "William Sutherland, Rearchar, was married to Alexandrina Ross, New Tarbet, Milntown." Official extracts held by Lorna Milne. Aprrently they did the knot up twice, first for her parents, and then for his! Suspect the first of these is just the banns becing called - E.K.) He may have met his wife during his service in the Rosshire Militia.(10)
!Home: William was living up above Dornoch, at Rearchar (also spelled Rearqhuar) when he was married. He and Alexandrina set up housekeeping at Proney Naer (now known as Proncy Nain or Balnapolaig) just below the remaines of Proncy Castle. They were living here when their first three children were baptised in Dornoch Cathedral. The old house at Proncy was originally two attached cottages, and has been converted into a single house, with the roof raised a bit. It may have been thatched with heather when the Sutherlands lived there. It is haunted by a lady who opens the door of the main bedroom, and then just closes it and goes away. There is another ghost who walks along the lane, and one who walks along the main road just up from the gate, on the B9168. People have stopped to give him a lift, and when they open the car door no one is there. Infor from Martin Woodhouse, who rents the gouse from its present owner, Angus Murray. William, his wife & his 2 oldest children, Alexander & David, emigrated to Canada, leaving Dornoch on 21 May 1830. (Info found among old letters of the Angus Sutherland family). Another son, Angus, was baptised in Dornoch on 31 jan 1830, but seems to have died iether before or just after they came to Canada. They arrived at Perth Ontario in Sep., along with his brothers John (who settled in N.S.) and Angus. Two other brothers, George, & David , had already emigrated in June 1821 with the Lanark Society Settlers on the ship Clifford Canning. His brother, David, had setttled on 16 Jul 1821 on Lot 11, concession 5, in Ramsay Twp., Lanark Co., In 1842, David moved north to Wilberforce Twp. Renfrew Co., settling on Lots 24 & 25 of Concession 10. Family tradition has it that several other brothers and sisters also emigrated to Ramsay. From Perth, Ontario, William sent a letter on 19 set 1830 (Ontario Archives, RG 1, C IV, Ramsay Twp. Papers, Concession 4) to the Honourable P.Robinson: "Sir I am a Settler who has just come out from Scotland & as my brother lives in Ramsay I am persuaged to take a poor lot in that township which as been refused by many it is Lot No. 6 in the 4 Concession the front half. & I will give twenty pounds for it if I am not entitled to to draw land free for my Services in the Ross Shire Militia in both Scotland and Ireland for Some years---trusting you attention to answer I remain Sir Your Obt' Humble Servant William Sutherland Ramsay P.S. Please address care of David Sutherland near Michael Corkery." Wether or not William got this land he didn't stay on it for long, and a good thing too for it is terrible land; just one rocky ridge surrounded by swamp. In 1831, William 'squatted' on the east half of lot 13, concession 3, Ramsay Twp. The family lived here for some years and cleared "several small patches --- and had in all some 15 acres cleared, which was mostly covered with second growth timber again before he left it. He had a small flat roofed barn also, which was the whole of his improvements." (Ontario Archives, RG 1, C IV, Ramsay Twp. Papers, Con 3) This land is also dreadful, about half of it being "ash swale, very low and wet and not fit for cultivation. The rest is gravelly high land mostly covered with granite and stone." By 1840, he was living in the town of Perth when his brother George died and William acted on behalf of George's son John Sutherland. (National Archives of Canada film C-2826, Upper Canada Land Petitions, RG 1, L3, Volume 483 S Bundle 5, 1848-1850, #72.) By 18 Oct 1848, William was petitioning the Commissioner of Crown Lands to grant him the west 1/2 of Lot 17, Concession 5, Ramsay Twp., Lanark County, where he lived for one year and had cleared about 15 acres. "A clergy reserve. --the cleared land being of a sandy loam, good, (and) that there is about 15 acres of the same uncleared, that there is about 20 acres of a wet Cedar and alder Swamp, and the remainder is sand and rock. Quality of timber growing there being Maple Hemlock Elm and Cedar, and that it is worth 6 shillings and 6 pence per acre." He received title to this land on 18 October 1849, after paying 8 shillings per acre for it.(10)
!Home: The family was living on 200 acres on Concession 12, of which, 90 were coltivated (23 in crop & 67 in pasture). The family followed the example of William's younger brother David, and moved north to Wilberforce Twp soon after it was surveyed and opened to settlement in 1851.(ontario archives, Wilberforce Twp. Papers, Concession 12) By July 1853, he had performed the settlement duties on Lot 18, Concession 12, and was offering the Land Agent 4 pounds for it. In July 1854, he petitioned for Lot 17, Concession 12. And by 1861, he was living on Lot 16, Concession 12. He had finally found some fairly good land with good harwood bush suitable for making Potash, the first cash crop for most settlers in the area. From the Abstract Index to Deeds for south 1/2 of Lot 3, Concession 5, Stafford Twp., held at Pembroke Land REgister Offic, William & Alexandrina Sutherland bough this lot on 25 Jul 1862 for 300 pounds from Geroge Mick (his son Danny's father in law), and sold it 5 years later to Elizabeth King (his ons's David's mother-in-law) for 800 pounds. (10) In early 30's with 3 small sons, David, Alexander and James, and 2 broth er Angus and John; they sailed to Canada landing in Nova Scotia. John rem ained there. Wm and Alexandrina, brother Angus came to Lanark where 3 mo re children were born: Donald, John d. child, Margaret. In late 1840's Wm, Alexandrina, 4 sons, 1 dau settled near Lake Dore. Old est son Alexander left and settled near Bancroft (Mount Eagle). David a nd Donald had land joining their fathers. James worked with his father. W illiam bought his son's Donald's land and bought back Joseph Warren's pl us 50 acres from Edward Boyle. In Aug 1881 William died at 88 and in S ep an epidemic of diptheria broke out taking 3 of James Children wi th in 24 hours: Christiann 14, David 12, Ellen 6 (Tweedsmuir History La ke Dore WI)
