At age 13 he went to the shanty for the winter and from th en on worked with farmers during the summer and in the bush or sawmills du ring the winter and spring. He did this unti he could afford to buy a 2 00 acre farm at Micksburg. He sold his farm in 1918 and moved to a fa rm in the outskirts of Pakenham, in hopes of giving children a better educ ation.
