"Robert Coburn (26 December, 1812) and his brother James, who were bo rn in Leitrem, Ireland, emigrated to Canada in 1831 and canoed from Nepe an Township to Pembroke Township in pursuit of timber wealth in the Upp er Ottawa Valley. Robert married Emma Fraser, Pembroke, in 1838. They h ad six children, Hugh F., Martha, Ann, Elizabeth, Catherine, and Rebecc a. Robert worked with Peter White, Pembroke, in lumbering enterprise s. He was also clerk of Pembroke Township for twenty-five years, and w as an original trustee of Pembroke United Church (Wesley)."

I descend from Robert Coburn who arrived in Pembroke Township in 1831 and have been conducting some fairly extensive research into this family.

I tried to reply on the message board but I'm not certain it worked - I 'm no tech wizard.

Anyway, here is my theory for what it is worth. I have for some time been trying to connect your Coburn's to the rest of the family and forgive the length of this email but I hope to help make the connection.

My family history, as passed down to me, is as follows:

Robert Coburn b. 1812 County of Leitrim, Ireland was the son of Andrew Coburn and Rebecca Wallace. He had a brother named James, born 1814, a nd a sister Catherine, born 1817.

This was Andrew Coburn's second marriage. He had previously been marri ed to Ellen Grey and had had several children in his first marriage (one source has suggested six).

Robert, his mother, James, Catherine, and Ann (who was born 1804 and was a child from the first marriage) came to Canada in or around 1830. They fir st stayed in Nepean Twp, Carleton County with Robert Wallace (a brother of Rebecca). Robert and James in the employ of Peter White came up to Pembro ke Township in 1831 and then sent for their Mother, Catherine and Ann in 1834 once they had settled on a piece of property.

Andrew Coburn did not accompany this family to Canada. He was apparently waiting for a pension with the Royal Irish Costabulary and was reticent to leave his children from his first marriage. He may have intended to follo w but it appears he died approximately four years later.

Ann never married and died in 1842. (She is recorded on Robert's tombston e, Wesley United Church cemetery, Pembroke)

First, based on this, your Ann Coburn could not be a sibling. Howeve r, I do believe she was a niece.

I have already identified one brother from the first marriage who settl ed in Alice Township around 1850, being Alexander Coburn born abt. 1800. He was married to Katherine O'Brien. I have compiled some info. on this family b ut could also put you in touch with a direct descendant.

This, however, again shows that your Alexander is not a sibling as once again this would give duplicate names to siblings and it doesn't make sens e. Further your people seem to have been born later that Robert - and therefo re cannot be siblings from this first marriage.

However, I am also aware that it has been said there was an additional brother, namely Benjamin. It is my belief, but I cannot prove it yet that your Coburns descend from this brother. I have heard of a John A. Coburn (married to a Jane Anderson) and have heard it said he was the son of Benjamin Coburn. I have located this Coburn in Alice Township - settling physically close by to an Alexander Coburn who appears to have married a Rebecca Moore. Your Ann Coburn who married Thomas Miskimmons, also settle d on a piece of property quite close to them.

I know that the source that maintains that John A. Coburn was the son of Benjamin Coburn, also maintains that Benjamin Coburn came to the Pembroke area very early on (i.e. 1828) but I have found no proof of this - and hav e found no evidence whatsoever of Benjamin Coburn actually having come to Pembroke area.

I had come to the conclusion that his descendants (and not Benjamin himsel f) had come to the area at a later time and your information seems to be consistent with this.

I know that your Ann Coburn was born in County Down Ireland - while Robert Coburn etc. were born in County Leitrim. I am currently trying to locate Andrew Coburn's service file with the Royal Irish Constabulary. My understanding is that the men in service were customarily stationed in a County other than where they originated from and the service file (if it c an be found) should have this information - my theory being that he joined th e Royal Irish Constabulary after being widowed and was stationed then in Leitrim County. This Andrew Coburn had also fought in the Napoleonic Wars and I intend to research records here as well if that's possible.

Anyway, Shirley, if you could provide me with what information you have th at suggests this link, this might help. I am also sending this email to Faye Bennett as I see she is connected with your Ann Coburn as well.
